The objective of the project was to create a grid of LED tiles that could be used to play games (for example: minesweeper, the floor is lava, Simon says, etc.). I started by designing a tile that could support the weight of a human. Then, I have added sensors and lights to the tile.
Mechanical Design
I started the design of the tile in Fusion360. The tile needed to be modular and easy to store. To achieve this, I have used aluminum extrusions, L-profiles, and opaque plexi. The aluminum extrusions formed my bottom level and enabled me to connect the tiles together. The top layer consisted of L-profiles holding the internal structure and supporting the opaque plexi used to diffuse the light.
Code
To be able to run games on the tiles, I needed them to communicate with one another. This was done by setting up a master-slave communication system where the master was running the game in C and the slave changed the color and sent the sensors data with Python.
Conclusion
This project required a mix of mechanical design and CODE, making it a good exercise. I did not encounter any major problems during this project as I tested every small components before implementing them into the final tile.
